Carcinogen and can cause birth defects.

BUTYLATED COMPOUNDS (BHA AND BHT)

BHA is primarily used as an antioxidant and preservative in food and cosmetics. It also serves as a preservative and antioxidant in pharmaceutical preparations and skincare formulations that contain oils and fats.

Potential Concern:
Can cause Endocrine disruption and organ-system toxicity.

BUTOXYETHANOL

Butoxyethanol is a glycol ether that functions as a fragrance additive with a sweet odor.

Potential Concern:
Carcinogen, organ toxicity.

ETHANOLAMINES (MEA/DEA/TEA)

Diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA) are key examples of ethanolamines—a chemical group comprised of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) and alcohols. They are used in a wide range of applications including cosmetics and personal care products.

Potential Concern:
Might affect reproductive health , skin toxicity and may form carcinogenic nitrosamines.

ETHOXYLATED INGREDIENTS (1-4 DIOXANE CONTAMINATION)

Ethoxylated ingredients on their own are of low concern, however, the process of ethoxylation, may leave behind trace amounts of carcinogens. Ethoxylation is the process of reacting ethylene oxide with other chemicals to make them less harsh, which creates small amounts of 1,4-dioxane.

Potential Concern:
Release potential carcinogens and can cause reproductive toxicity.

FORMALDEHYDE (AND FORMALDEHYDE-RELEASING PRESERVATIVES)

Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (FRPs) are used in many personal care products, particularly in shampoos and liquid baby soaps. These chemicals, which help prevent microbes from growing in water-based products.

Potential Concern:
Carcinogenic and known to cause skin irritation

METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE AND METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT) are widely used preservatives found in liquid cosmetic and personal care products. Both chemicals inhibit bacterial growth in cosmetic products on their own, but they are most commonly used as a mixture in products

Potential Concern:
Linked to lung toxicity, allergic reactions, and possible neurotoxicity

Contamination with PAHs which are linked to cancer, skin sensitizer, contact dermatitis, allergen.

PARABENS

Parabens are preservatives used in a wide variety of personal care products and foods to prevent the growth of microbes

Potential Concern:
Carcinogenic, endocrine disruption, development and reproductive toxicity, allergen.

PHTHALATES (DBP, DEHP, DEP, DMP)

Phthalates are preservatives used in cosmetics and personal care products, as well as stabilizers in soaps.

Potential Concern:
May cause birth defects, endocrine disruption.

RESORCINOL

Resorcinol is commonly used in hair products, hair dyes and acne medication.

Potential Concern:
Skin irritation, possible endocrine disruption, organ and immune toxicity.

SULFATES (SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE , SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE)

Sulphates are chemicals commonly found in many cleaning and personal care products, like shampoos, soaps, and toothpaste.

Potential Concern:
Can cause skin and eye irritation, allergen.

TALC

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral substance used in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products from baby powders to eye shadows. It is added to absorb moisture, smooth or soften products, prevent caking, and make makeup opaque.

Skin Irritation, possible carcinogen and may cause organ system toxicity.

TOLUENE

Toluene, found naturally in crude oil and in the tolu tree, is added to gasoline and is used in the making of cosmetics and skincare products.

Potential Concern:
Organ system toxicity, severe skin irritation.

TRICLOSAN AND TRICLOCARBAN

Triclosan and Triclocarban are antibacterial agents commonly found in detergents and soaps.

Potential Concern:
May cause endocrine disruption
